Record Judging

Last night's judge did a super job on a large and demanding entry. My small quibble, with no personal axe to grind, is with the treatment of some of the Record entries, which were penalised for being "too pictorial". This goes against the advice pubished in the latest Society rules, which say that a Record entry "need not necessarily be pictorially pleasing, but it is a bonus if it is."
Is this a view unique to our Society? Could the rule be drawn to the attention of judges before they look at the enrties? Or shuold we withdraw the advice?
